Design Process
In the first step, the intro phrases were divided into 10 different categories based on a list showing how stories begin in 95 different languages around the world. Then, with a quick search of the regions each language was spoken, countries were color-coded accordingly. Since the subject of the infographic has a historical, cultural theme, the design was inspired by old and fantastical maps.

The second step was adding the notable facts about the subject and creating a grid system for the layout.

Illustrations

To add a more fantastical feel to the piece, illustrations were created based on some of the most visually striking intros to stories.

Kazakh: "A long long time ago, when goats had feathers"

Filipino: “At the beginning of time”

Korean: "Back when tigers used to smoke tobacco"

Esperanto: "In a time already long past, when it was still of use to cast a spell"

Final Step
Lastly, all the illustrations were placed close to the country where the intro is spoken. As the last means to bring the piece together, a texture was added on top of everything to give an antique feeling to the whole poster.
